How to Maintain Optimal Skin Health
Once your skin is damaged, it can be tough to make it feel young and fresh again. That’s why it’s incredibly important to maintain your skin health as much as possible from the beginning. How your treat your skin daily has a greater affect than you may realize.
Regardless of the condition of your skin, it’s never too late to implement a regular skincare routine at home. We’ve collected some ideas to get you started.
Here are the top eight tips to get your healthy skin back:
- Buy gentle cleansers – If you want your skin to be soft, your daily cleanser needs to treat it gently. Scrubs should only be used every few days, and avoid formulas that are too acidic or too basic.
- Avoid toner – Toners used to be used as a solution for balancing out cleansers that were inherently too acidic or too basic. But with more options on the market today, there’s no longer a need for toner.
- Stay away from fragrance – We know that you love your favorite scent. But fragrance most often will affect your skin in some way. If your reaction is intolerable, choose fragrance free lotions and creams.
- Use caution during and after your daily bath/shower – Keep these precautions in mind before you bathe:
- Use warm water, not hot water.
- Take quick baths/showers to avoid drying out your skin.
- Shave your legs sparingly.
- Moisturize your skin after shaving.
- Protect your skin from sun damage – The sun ages your skin more quickly than it would naturally age. And as you’ve likely already learned, it causes skin cancer. If you have to be out in the sun, apply sunscreen often (especially midday).
- Choose healthy foods – Whole, fresh foods keep your skin looking young. Eat plenty of whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables.
- Stop smoking – Smoking is another factor that expedites the aging process for your skin. It causes the blood vessels near your skin’s surface to narrow, which causes more wrinkling.
- Minimize stress – If you often experience high stress, you’re more likely to break out and become more susceptible to uncomfortable skin conditions. Take some time out of your busy schedule to relieve stress.
