Body Mass Index
A number calculated based on your weight and height. The higher your BMI the higher the risk for obesity related illnesses such as heart disease, sleep apnea, diabetes, certain cancers and arthritic conditions. BMI does not take into account body fat percentage and body frame. Patients with higher muscle mass will have a higher BMI but this may not increase the above medical risks.
- BMI < 18.5 Underweight
- BMI 18.5 to 24.9 Normal
- BMI 25.0 to 29.9 Overweight
- BMI 30.0 to 39.9 Obese
- BMI > 40 Morbid Obesity
